Building a Sisterhood
Yes, I know it’s been a while, five months to be exact, but I am back with some good content from this past semester. I wasn’t sure how often I was going to be able to upload once school started again, and I quickly learned that uploading was out of the picture for a little due to how little free time I have during the semester between classes, studying, practicing, traveling, hanging out with teammates, sleeping, working out, etc.
One thing I really want to focus on in this blog is teammates. This semester has been the most fun I have ever had with teammates. We do everything, and I mean everything, together. We watched the Golden Bachelorette together every single Wednesday night it was on in the fall, and we personally think that Guy was done dirty at the end (if you know you know). We had many movie nights, game nights, pumpkin carving, dressing up as 80s workout for Halloween, Teamsgiving, Secret Santa, dance parties, and many other laughable moments.
Our coach built a sisterhood this year.
We have four freshman, who all bring much needed younger energy to this team. As a result, we have many spontaneous karaoke and dance parties, funny inside jokes, and laughable moments. We all complement each other’s personalities. For example, I am a very intense player and person in general, but Sammie is super light hearted and always positive, which in turn forces me to be more positive. It is those kinds of connections that are happening, and that is why I keep saying we are a sisterhood this year.
Was it easy in the beginning? No. We had our rough patches. We had our growing pains. We had to learn important lessons. I never said building a sisterhood was easy. It takes everyone to complete the build and form the connections.
I think it started at our first tournament of the fall semester in Michigan. We stayed in a house, all nine of us plus Coach. One of the nights, both of our coaches were at a meeting, and as all of my teammates were returning from dinner with their parents, we slowly started to have a dance party. We have a giant speaker we brought, and we were blasting music for almost 2 hours before our coaches walked in. We had turned out the lights and were dancing and singing. It was funny because since the lights were off in the house, when our coaches returned from their meeting, they thought we had gone to bed already, and they walked in on us dancing and singing our hearts out. They loved it.
We went on to finish runner-up in that tournament.
Like I said, this was the beginning of us forming our sisterhood. Throughout the fall, we finished top five in three out of four tournaments, one of those tournaments being a Power 4 tournament, The Powercat Invitational hosted by Kansas State. Probably top 5 hardest courses I have ever played, and yet we finished high in a very stacked field. We earned our lowest ranking in program history at 148 (currently we sit at 154 once all the teams were finished competing this fall) which is a super impressive mark.
The great golf we have played this fall is all about the sisterhood we have formed. We have made many memories that will last us a lifetime. Yes, we practice hard, and are always working hard, but we also have tons of fun while doing it, and you always play better when you are having fun.
